Recounting the history of Onset as the premiere vacation destination on the south coast are 20 local historians; each with their own vivid remembrances of a time gone past along with their hopes for a brighter future for the village. They, along with a large collection of postcards and photographs, tell the story.
Local folklore and history are unraveled as the film takes the viewer on a trip of discovery. Origins of Dummy Bridge, “JungleTown” and Wicket's Island are revealed. Who knew that trolleys ran through the town or that a Japanese immigrant spearheaded the original cleanup of Onset beach? How many new residents know about the impact of the Hurricane of 1938, have heard about the huge building explosion that leveled three downtown buildings or know of the world class entertainers who performed at the Colonial Casino? Or, for that matter, have heard of the murder that’s blamed on its demise?
We hope you’ll enjoy our film many times over and that you’ll share it with your family and friends. Onset deserves to become again the place it once was. We hope that “Postcards from Onset” will motivate people unfamiliar to our village and beaches to visit and enjoy all Onset has to offer.
