Preview is only available to registered and logged in users.

Episode Description:

CliniSpace is an online, multiuser virtual hospital where real doctors and nurses can hone their skills on virtual patients. The emphasis is on thinking and acting quickly and accurately in high pressure situations, such as emergency room cases or mass casualty incidents. If the right actions are not taken, the virtual patients will die.

CliniSpace won the 2011 Grand Prize of $25,000 at the Federal Virtual Worlds Challenge, sponsored by the US Army Research Laboratory, largely because of its built-in intelligence and realism.

The show includes a live demonstration of CliniSpace, with its co-creators, Wm. LeRoy Heinrichs and Parvati Dev, playing the roles of doctor and nurse respectively. Wm. LeRoy Heinrichs, M.D., Ph.D., is co-founder and Executive Medical Director of Innovation in Learning, the company that developed Clinispace. He's also Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford Medical Center. Parvati Dev, Ph.D., is co-founder and CEO of Innovation in Learning, and is also the founder of SUMMIT Labs at Stanford, which has done pioneering work merging computer technology with medical training. Martin Wasserman is the host.
