Episode Description:

"The Gwich'in - A Matter Of Survival".... Brethren Voices visits Arctic Village, Alaska, a small village 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle to learn the plight of The Native Gwich'in People who live off the land. The Porcupine Caribou Herd is the central feature in the Gwich'in way of life. The threat of oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is not only a threat against the environment but a threat to the culture of these Native Americans. Oil interests in the U.S. government seek to drill for oil in the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge where life begins for this caribou herd. For the Gwich'in, it is the sacred place that needs protection from oil drilling. Failure to protect the Coastal Plain would damage both the plain and the caribou herd as well as the fundamental human rights of the Gwich'in to their culture, subsistence, health and religion.
