Episode Description:

BV 09-02 - This Amazon Rainforest Learning Tour by the New Community Project takes people to the Cuyabeno Ecological Reserve in the Ecuadorian Amazon situated at the headwaters of the Amazon River. Hosted by SELVA, a non-governmental international organization founded by 12 women in 1997, tour members learn about the threatened rainforest as well as the indigenous communities that depend on them. Since 1964, the indigenous people of Ecuador have been threatened by the effects of oil drilling in their environment. Numerous chemicals are used to extract the oil. Often these chemicals and oil get into the water supply threatening the health of the indigenous people.
