Episode Description:

Milo, Maine is seeking to have a privately-run Federal Prison built in their town. Many area residents and, indeed, many Mainers are deeply concerned. Waldo County Peace and Justice showed a film on April 30th at the Belfast Free Library. The film showed how inmates transferred to a Virginia prison from Connectiucut were abused, tortured and even killed by minimally trained and underpaid guards. There was very little, if any oversight. Though Wallens Ridge, Va. Prison was not a private prison, it was run very much like one. A law (LD 1095) is currently in front of Maine's Criminal Justice Committee that would allow building a private prison in Maine AND allow Maine inmates to be shipped to any private prison in the US. If we think private prison will save tax dollars, just remember, private prisons are already heavily subsidized with your tax dollars. Recent news reports also have brand-new Federal prisons completely empty because there are no government funds to operate them. After the film, local people from as far as Dover-Foxcroft will question the merits of LD 1095.
