With earthquakes very much in the news, this episode covers quakes from several different angles, including the science of earth movements, advances in predicting quakes, how to prepare for an earthquake, and improving the response to quakes. Host Martin Wasserman interviews two guests. Jeanne Hardebeck is a research geophysicist on the earthquake hazards team at the U.S. Geological Survey. She has a Ph.D. in geophysics from Caltech, and was the winner of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers as well as the Charles Richter Early Career Award from the Seismological Society of America. Kevin Montgomery, Ph.D., is CEO of Intelesense Technologies, which provides a global, real time, electronic monitoring system for aiding the response to disasters of all kinds, including earthquakes. He is also the Director of the National Biocomputation Center at Stanford University, where he and his team develop advanced medical technologies for NASA, the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, and many other organizations. The show also contains footage of the giant tsunami that hit Japan in the wake of the recent earthquake there.
