Episode Description:

Are You Ready for Emergencies?
Who’s in charge? Will they respond fast enough? Will I and my family be safe?
These are questions that pop up when major public emergencies strike, be they natural disasters, severe storms, infectious disease epidemics, or man-made disasters. Responding to these kinds of events has become an enormous challenge facing health providers, public officials, and private citizens alike. Preparing for them is an equally difficult task.
It’s heartening to know that there are people – our friends and neighbors as well as trained professionals – who are ready to help protect our health and safety in the case of such extraordinary events. And the December edition of Physician Focus with the Massachusetts Medical Society will show you who some of these people are.
Emergency Preparedness: Mass Responds, hosted by Hopkinton resident Dr. James Kenealy, gives you an inside look at emergency preparedness in Massachusetts and how state officials and local citizens are working together to prepare for and respond to these events.
Featured guests are Mary Clark, Director of the Emergency Preparedness Bureau of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health; Suzanne Salamon, M.D., a primary care physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston and volunteer for the Brookline Medical Reserve Corps; and Dawn Sibor, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the Brookline Public Health Department.
Ms. Clark discusses the state’s role in preparing and responding to emergencies, and Dr. Salamon and Ms. Sibor, describe how such efforts work at the local level, in their community of Brookline.
You’ll learn about the Medical Reserve Corps and the Massachusetts System for Advanced Registration, two entities at the center of our emergency preparedness efforts. You’ll find out about Mass Responds – a new entity designed to bring better coordination and more efficiency to preparedness and response.
And – most important, perhaps - you’ll learn how you can become involved, by volunteering for a Medical Reserve Corps in your local community or region.
I invite you to join us for some lessons in emergency preparedness in the December edition of Physician Focus. No test required.
