Episode Description:

Much has been written and filmed about World War II and the many sacrifices made, but not as much has been uncovered about the many sacrifices made on the home front. They were tough times at home too with blackouts on the East and West Coasts, gas and food rationing, Civil Defense units organized on a local level, and women taking on many of the mill jobs once held only by men. Here in the heavily industrialized Blackstone Valley, these changes and sacrifices were felt by all, so join us as Along the Blackstone’s Episode #50 explores the world at war on the Home Front as experienced in the Blackstone Valley. Consider for a moment the environment where the women working the 2nd shift at the Whitin’s Machine Works on magneto’s for Allied air planes were serenaded over the loud speakers at the mill by the sounds of Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. The world at war from the perspective of the Home Front.
