Episode Description:

The largest economic & growth project of the early 19th century here in the Blackstone Valley was the building of the Blackstone Canal. But there is another significant aspect of that story, that economic engine, the Canal, also brought with it a distinctive human story as well for these canal builders were Irish. These Irish Canal “strollers” brought their music, their culture and their heritage here to the Blackstone Valley as well, not without some difficulty. These Irish were pre-Famine Irish and trained in building canals having worked on the Erie Canal and the many canals in England. While the Canal is no longer functional, the Irish and their heritage are an important part of the Valley and America’s story. So join us as Along the Blackstone Episode #18 takes on a totally Irish journey filled with great stories from Professors Jake Powers of Worcester State College and Scott Molloy of the University of Rhode Island and great music from Pendragon as we explore the stories of the Blackstone Valley’s first major immigrant group – the Irish.
