Episode Description:
Vaudeville! Moving Pictures! These new expressions of the arts along with the development of more leisure time created a culture of theater goers among the mill workers of the Blackstone Valley at the turn of the 19th century. Combined with democratic seating arrangements – “First come, First served” began to break down class structure. Theaters were the center of a growing appreciation for the arts. So, where are all those theaters today? Join us as Along the Blackstone’s Episode #24 explores the growing movement of preserving old theaters and the role they play in today’s culturally aware world. But remember, “preservation” is just another word for elbow grease and hard work. Let’s watch as a classic Vaudeville Theater is transformed and an old Masonic Lodge becomes a center for world music.
