Episode Description:

In the past few years, science has made great strides in understanding the basic workings of life. This has given us some powerful new medical tools, but also confronted us with some thorny ethical issues. In this episode, we'll examine these issues with Professor David Magnus.
Dr. Magnus is the director of the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics and co-chair of the Ethics Committee for Stanford Hospital. He’s also co-editor of the American Journal of Bioethics, and was the principal editor of a book of essays called “Who Owns Life?”. He currently serves on the California Human Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee.
The topics discussed include the ethics of stem cell research, the ethics of organ transplantation where the demand always exceeds the supply, and the use of life extension technologies on people who are terminally ill with no likelihood of recovery.
Biomedical ethics involves frequent tradeoffs between conflicting interests, including the interests of the individual versus the interests of the larger group. Join us for a fascinating discussion.
