BV 19-09 - Realities of Homelessness

Los Angeles County and the City of Los Angeles in 2018, spent millions of dollars to move, over 20,000 people off the streets into permanent housing. However, in January 2019, the ''Point In Time'' count, showed that the number of homeless people had increased by 12% in the county and 16% in the city. How is such a thing possible? Most communities in Southern California fared even worse.

Jonathan Hunter provided a workshop at the 2019 North Woods Song & Story Fest which dispelled some of the myths that persists about people who are homeless.

''Jonathan Hunter is a creative leader in collaborative design of innovative solutions to address the needs of our most vulnerable citizens, including developing and funding supportive housing for people who are chronically homeless and have disabilities related to mental illness, substance use, HIV/AIDS and other chronic health conditions. In Los Angeles, this work resulted in the creation of more than 3,000 new units of supportive housing. His clients include government agencies, for-profit and nonprofit developers and foundations.''

As part of the workshop, Jonathan shows how over the years, wages have not kept up with the cost of housing. ''During the 1960's, a person needing a place to sleep, could pay 50 cents/night for a ''flop house.'' In the 1980's, they would have to pay $600/month.

Brent Carlson interviews Jonathan Hunter at Camp Myrtlewood, Bridge, Oregon, during the 2019 Song & Story Fest.
