Episode Description:

'WOOD SMOKE' - In Our Eyes and in Our Lungs 55:20

Ernie Grolimund of Waterville, with an engineering background presents a case of wood smoke harming not only our health, but our environment, as well. He has photos and documents to show that particulates from burning wood are much worse than our State and US Governments admit. The worse offenders being fireplaces and uncertified wood stoves. He admits that it would be difficult to enforce restrictions against rural and poor families. He does offer solutions. After talking with Ernie, I visited a window factory in Vassalboro, Maine that makes heating briquettes from scraps of kiln-dried wood. No chemicals are used in the process and this product can be burned very cleanly in old, uncertified wood stoves. At the end, I conduct my own study to show just how efficiently these briquettes burn.
