The Inkas were the Roman Empire of the New World. How did they control such a vast territory without a writing system? Prof. Gary Urton of Harvard has been unlocking the secrets of the elaborate knotted cords called Khipus. The different types of colors and knots gave them the ability to record quantities and keep census, thus giving us a history. Urton has studied almost a thousand Khipus and he gives the stunning results of his decades-long study.
