Christians Taking Peacemaking Seriously

''What if Christians took their peacemaking as seriously, as warriors do for war making?'' Out of that vision, in the mid-1980s, members of the historic peace churches, the Church of the Brethren and the North American Mennonites were seeking new ways to express their faith. At the same time, there was a consciousness that by using the creative energy of organized nonviolence, ordinary people could stand in front of the weapons and encourage less violent ways for change to happen.

In 1988, Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) was founded and by 1992, CPT had put together a series of delegations to Haiti, Iraq, and the West Bank, Palestine.

Cliff Kindy, a reservist with CPT since 1990, is interviewed for this edition of ''Brethren Voices,'' by Brent Carlson. Cliff has served with CPT in Vieques, Puerto Rico; Colombia; Gaza Strip and West Bank, Palestine; Chiapas, Mexico; Iraq; and with First Nation communities in New Brunswick, Canada; South Dakota, and New York.
