Episode Description:

With support from the Long Island Sound Futures
Fund and the National Fish & Wildlife Federation Scott takes you on journey into the world of Southern New England’s Diadromous Fish; The Alewife or otherwise known as the River Herring. A fish species critical to the food web that supports a wide variety of life as it spreads across our oceans and spawns in our freshwater ecosystems. However, up until the 1960’s Alewives had all but disappeared due to the fragmentation of our brooks and rivers by mills and their dams. But thanks to efforts of folks like Steve Gephart of the Connecticut DEP Inland Fisheries Division and Tom Cleveland of the Branford Land Trust, Scott flashes back on a journey through the actual building of Branford Supply Ponds fish ladder at Queach Brook. In addition to rare underwater video footage of Alewives in their native habitat, Scott captures fantastic interviews with Dr. David Post of Yale University and Dr. Barry Chernoff of Wesylan University as well as local historian Charlie Farrow of the East Haddam Historical Society to sum up one mankinds greatest ecological efforts; Reconnecting Diadromous fish to their spawning habitat by building fish ladders.
