Episode Description:

This episode deals with one of the last frontiers of science and one of the most difficult to study, the human brain itself. How does it work? Why does it sometimes not work the way we want it to? And how can we make it work better? The guest is Michael Merzenich, Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience at the University of California San Francisco, and a pioneer in brain science for almost five decades. He’s also a leading figure in the new field of brain plasticity, which holds that your mental wiring never becomes "frozen," but can be modified at any age, meaning that you can change your behavior and your habits, and improve your mental sharpness, memory and even your hearing, at any age. Prof. Merzenich has made many contributions to brain science, won numerous awards, and holds about 100 patents. He’s also the founder and chief scientific officer of Posit Science, a company which uses brain plasticity to develop new behavioral therapies. He’s also the author of the recent book, “Soft-Wired: How the New Science of Brain Plasticity Can Change Your Life.” Martin Wasserman hosts.
