Episode Description:

At the public hearing in front of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee in Augusta on Feb 25th, over 70 people testified about proposed rules to govern metallic mining in Maine. The vast majority gave their reasons why these rules should not be adopted. Most felt that the rules proposed by LD 146 were far too weak to protect the resources and the people of Maine. About a half dozen were in favor of these rules. Those half dozen were either paid lobbyists for the industry , indirect representatives of JD Iriving (Canadian company wanting to operate the mine , or the DEP that testified for the mining rules to be adopted). LD 146 presents the same rules presented at the last two sessions where they were resoundingly rejected. I’ve compressed eight hours of testimony into one so that you might get a good cross section of how the people of Maine feel about what they see as irresponsible mining.
