Episode Description:

Chris Hedges spoke at the Stony Point Center in Stony Point, NY at the Un-Gala! Celebration for Anne Barstow and Tom Driver on October 18, 2014 that was sponsored by the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. Chris Hedges was the keynote speaker to 100 people attending, many who are politically active in fighting several causes against war, mass incarceration and the proliferation of weapons and violence both domestic and abroad.

Chris Hedges soon states “The rush of battle is a potent and almost lethal addiction, for war is a drug.” His speech is one that draws in his new experiences after his 2003 book "War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning". Hedges continues to draw on his own experience and on the literature of combat from Homer to Michael Herr, Hedges shows how war seduces not just those on the front lines but entire societies, corrupting politics, destroying culture, and perverting the most basic human desires.

Chris Hedges spent two decades as a foreign correspondent. He reported on conflicts in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans. For fifteen of those years he worked for The New York Times as the Middle East Bureau Chief and the Balkan Bureau Chief during the war in Bosnia. He reported on Al Qaeda while based in Paris. He and a team of reporters were awarded the Pulitizer Prize in 2002 for their coverage of global terrorism.
