Episode Description:

Several years ago Future Talk visited Singularity University after it graduated its very first class. We recently visited them again to see how they're doing, and they seem to be doing very well. S.U. is a technology incubator for budding entrepreneurs. In a typical ten week class, they spend half the time learning about the latest exponentially growing technologies, and the other half looking for ways to apply this technology to the world's most pressing problems. The goal is to come up with new products or services that can benefit a billion or more people. Their philosophy is that the world's biggest problems are also its biggest business opportunities.

We attended the graduation celebration of the latest graduating class, which consisted of 80 students from 35 different countries, who organized themselves into about 20 startup companies to do things like using construction cranes as 3D printers to print multistory buildings, designing hearing aids that also monitor your vital signs and even jog your memory when necessary, and creating inexpensive kits to turn any gasoline powered car into a hybrid.

Our program includes interviews with numerous students and staff recorded at the celebration, including S.U. co-founder Peter Diamandis, who is a serial entrepreneur, a long time leader in space research and the founder of the X Prize Foundation, which awards large cash prizes to people who achieve certain scientific breakthroughs. He's also a Harvard trained physician.

The in-studio guest is Daniel Kraft, M.D., director of the medical track at S.U. Daniel Kraft is an entrepreneur and an inventor who has patented multiple medical devices, including an FDA approved device for the minimally invasive harvesting of bone marrow. In addition, he's an avid pilot who serves as an officer and flight surgeon in the California Air National Guard, and was a finalist in NASA's astronaut selection program.

S.U. resides on the grounds of NASA's Ames Research Center and is supported by leading technology companies, including Google, Cisco and Autodesk.
