Episode Description:

Sherri Mitchell, Penobscot woman and advocate for Indigenous People's rights was the keynote speaker at the annual Pax Christi Assembly at St. Joseph's Hall in Gardiner, Maine on May 17th. She spoke about how the Catholic church and the governments of the United States and Canada systematically took away the rights and lands of all the indigenous people who have been there for thousands of years. Sherri will review several Supreme Court and statewide decisions that stripped the Indian of his entire culture and heritage. She will also point out how the taking of Indian lands is related to recent decisions concerning the transfer and mining of tar sands oil and the harm that will be caused by that mining. There was so much to cover that I had to make her presentation into two Maine Social Justice episodes. Through Sherri, you will learn more about our Indigenous People's history than you did in your entire life at school.
