On February 9th, Lance Tapley, noted investigative reporter for the Portland, Maine Phoenix addressed a small group at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Augusta. He spoke about how he happened to become interested in prisons and their effects on society. He went on to talk about some of the causes associated with people being incarcerated. He also talked about why many inmates soon return to our jails and prisons. He asked the audience why they thought people had little compassion for those in prison. Especially for those in prison who were never convicted of any crime and appeared to be only victims of mental illness.
