Episode Description:

On May 1st, I taped the morning session of the Joint Standing Committee on Transportation hearing on LD 1357. Maine Senator Dennis Damon presented a bill to repeal the most objectionable portions of the Real ID Act. Two years ago, Maine rejected the Real ID Act as being too obtrusive. Last year, under pressure from Homeland Security, the Maine Legislature and Governor Baldacci caved in and adopted Real ID.

At this hearing, speakers were in favor of LD 1357 (opposes Real ID) at a ratio of ten to one. One of the last speakers at the morning session stated that Homeland Security and Real ID were NOT about protecting citizens, but rather, about controlling citizens and resources.
Sure enough, two hours later, while I was taping Susan Collins' staff and proponents of health care reform outside the Federal Building, I was told by Homeland Security that I was not allowed to video tape the event, AFTER, I had already received permission to do so. I did leave my camera running and I got some interesting audio.

It didn't take Homeland Security very long to prove that they really are about controlling US citizens and resources (health care).
