Episode Description:

A look at the rapidly expanding field of 3D printing, which some people feel has revolutionary potential for society. 3D printers are similar to ordinary printers, except that instead of depositing tiny drops of ink on paper, they deposit tiny threads of plastic or other material on a platform, building layer upon layer to create solid 3-dimensional objects. The program includes a 3D printing demonstration at the Menlo Park TechShop (, which is a do-it-yourself workshop that provides members with access to a wide range of tools, including 3D printers. It also features a report from the 3D printing facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, which has a titanium printer. The studio guests are Clay Lambert, General Manager of the Menlo Park TechShop, and Blaine Dehmlow, General Manager of the San Francisco TechShop, who also serves on the Advisory Board of Type A Machines, a company that designs and builds 3D printers. Blaine's job as an advisor is to develop new uses for the machines. Martin Wasserman hosts.
