Episode Description:

This episodes's topic is the Innovation for Jobs Summit meeting (I4J Summit), an international two day conference of about 60 top leaders from different sectors of society, looking for ways to harness technological innovation to create more meaningful employment opportunities for more people. One of the themes was that society is divided into different vertical "silos" such as government, business and education, and these silos are often unable to communicate or cooperate effectively on matters of mutual interest. The I4J Summit was a kind of brainstorming session looking for ideas and insights into how to bridge this gap, and featured some of the world's most cutting edge thinkers, many of whom emphasized the need for rethinking our educational systems.

There are two in-studio guests on the program. Curt Carlson is President and CEO of SRI International (, and also serves on President Obama's National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. SRI International, which hosted the I4J Summit, is one of the world's leading research and development organizations, and specializes in inventing new technologies and spinning them off into profitable companies. David Nordfors is Director of the International Institute of Innovation, Journalism and Communication ( and was the chief organizer of the I4J Summit.

Additionally, we spent both days at the Summit and interviewed about 30 of the attendees, of which we included four in the program:

Vint Cerf is widely regarded as one of the "fathers of the Internet", playing a leading role in its early development. He's currently Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google, and was the seed sponsor of the I4J Summit.

Sven Otto Littorin is a former Swedish Minister of Employment and past president of the European Council of Ministers. He was also a senior consultant to the I4J Summit.

Irwin Jacobs is co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of Qualcomm, a leading telecommunications company based in San Diego, and in recent years has taken an active interest in promoting better education.

Esther Wojcicki is an educational innovator and founder of the Palo Alto High School journalism program, the largest such program in the country with about 600 students, which uses very different and much more interactive teaching methods than the traditional approach.

The interviews which were not included in the program are being uploaded to the Internet, and can be seen by going to and clicking on I4J Summit.
