Episode Description:

This episode explores whether social networking technology can advance the cause of peace in the world. There are two guests, both from the Peace Innovation Lab at Stanford University. Margarita Quihuis (KEE-wees) is the director of the Lab, and Mark Nelson is one of its cofounders. Margarita is also a social entrepreneur and mentor capitalist, and was the head of Silicon Valley's first technology incubator for women entrepreneurs. Mark is also head of the EPIC Challenge, which seeks to create an international network of researchers to find ways to create positive social interactions across conflict boundaries. The goal of the Peace Innovation Lab is to create friendly relationships between people on opposing sides of conflicts, do it in a quantifiable way, and then expand on it. One of their ventures is the "peace dot" program, which has gained support from a number of companies including Facebook, whose peace.facebook.com website originated with the Lab.

Of course, peace is a very complicated business involving many profound questions of human nature, and this episode touches on many of these basic questions to determine what's really involved in peacemaking, and the kind of difficulties that have to be overcome in order to succeed. Martin Wasserman hosts.
