The human brain is one of the most important objects in existence, but also one of the most difficult to study. In this episode, we look at recent advances in neuroscience with two guests.

Michael Merzenich is professor emeritus of neuroscience at the University of California at San Francisco. He's won numerous awards and honors for his work, and is especially known for his work with brain plasticity, meaning the ability of the brain to adapt itself physically to changing situations.

Simon Tan is a clinical neuropsychologist at Stanford Medical Center who also maintains a private practice in neuropsychology. He specializes in the diagnosis of developmental, psychiatric and neurologic disorders.

Topics of discussion include recent advances in neuroscience, the difference between "brain" and "mind", impairments of the mind, and untapped potentials of the mind. We also discuss the nature of thought, the nature of consciousness and nature of intelligence. Martin Wasserman hosts.
