Episode Description:

The Brethren Historical Library and Archives with Terry Barkley

It’s the job of the Brethren Historical Library and Archives to be the collection point of the publications,  historical records and documents of the Church of the Brethren as well as some items published by the other four Brethren groups, which include the Old Baptist Brethren, the Brethren Church, the Fellowship of Grace Brethren and the Dunkard Brethren.  All trace their origins back to the community of  Schwarzenau, Germany where the church  began in 1708.

Brent Carlson, the host of Brethren Voices interviews Terry Barkley, Director of the Brethren Historical Library and Archives.  During a tour of the facility located at the site of the Church of the Brethren General Offices, in Elgin, Illinois, Terry presents some of the history of the Brethren.   He demonstrates a wonderful pipe organ produced by Henry Kurtz and takes viewers into the vault which is the home to pristine copies of  historic  Brethren publications as well as some Bibles that were first printed in this country.

The BHLA is in the process of digitizing Brethren publications.  Brent Carlson assists viewers with a look at the digitized website of the Brethren Historical Library and Archives.  Take a look at:  WWW.archive . Then type:  Brethren Historical Library and Archives.

We thank Terry Barkley who has been the BHLA Director for two years.  He will be leaving this position on October 31, to return home to Alabama to care for his ailing father.

The program marks the 88th edition of “Brethren Voices” now in its 8th year of production by Portland Peace Church. For a complete production list of programs, please contact us. The programs are now in two Brethren Historical Libraries at the Young Center in Elizabethtown, PA besides the Brethren Historical Library and Archive in Elgin, IL.
