Episode Description:

The Gwich'in A Matter of Survival (17 minutes) features Charlie Swaney of Arctic Village, Alaska who tells about life in his community. It's dependent on caribou for their existence. Their life and culture revolve around the caribou. The Native Gwich'in feel that they were created about the same time as the caribou.

With the possibility of oil drilling in the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, there is much concern about their ability to continue to exist. The area is sacred ground for the Gwich'in. Out of reverence for the caribou, the Gwich'in will not disturb this place where new life begins for the caribou and other species of birds and animals.

This shortened version ask viewers to contact their U.S. Representatives and Senators to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
