BV 12-07 - Anabaptist and Pietist Studies

Anabaptist and Pietist Studies
Jeff Bach, Director of the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies
Hosted By Brent Carlson

The Church of the Brethren Traces its roots…
back over 300 years to 1708 when five men and three women gathered at the Eder river in Schwarzenau, Germany for baptism. This was an illegal act since all had been baptized as infants. For then, this baptism under the leadership of Alexander Mack was an outward symbol of their new faith and commitment to living that faith in community.

This was a time of strong governmental control of religious practices, nevertheless, there were dissenters who attempted to live out their faith in spite of the threat of persecution and death.

"Brethren Voices" meets with Jeff Bach, Director of the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies of Elizabethtown, PA. Bach discusses the ways of the early Brethren. As with most Anabaptist groups, the Brethren adopted biblical pacifism, plain and compassionate living and a shared search for truth.

Bach shares that the Anabaptist desired to follow New Testament teachings in the church. The movement spread rapidly, but encountered severe persecution because of its radical positions on baptism and separation of church from government.
