Episode Description:

The humble Farmer show for April 22, 2012

Well received in Northern New England for 34 years this month, this is the same old fashioned music and humorous social commentary show that has delighted young and old alike every week since April 6, 1978 for radio --- and now for television.

Music by: Clark Terry, Diana Krall, Woody Herman, Dave Frishberg, Slim Galliard, Jack Sheldon, Lenny Breau, Mckinney’s Cotton Pickers and Denny Breau.

This show contains a few minutes of Denny Breau playing guitar at a humor/music show Denny did with humble. Dr. Dick, who is popular with all ages, also performs with his dancing puppets.

This week humble is joined on camera by his young friend, Sylvia, whose smile might well enable her to soon seize control of the entire show.

The video over the music is mostly footage from humble going out to dig his spring garden by hand, discovering he needs to use his tractor to dig the garden, and then doing all the things he needs to do to get his old tractor into shape to plow. All of this happens in back of humble’s 200-year-old farmhouse in St. George, Maine. Tame fare, indeed, for viewers expecting someone to be shot, arrested or blown up.

The show is tightly scripted. It starts out with humble going out to dig his garden on a beautiful spring day. It was really more like a summer day in Maine, and we won’t see another day like it in Maine for another 6 weeks. The show ends, as usual, with the Keystone Cops driving a car off the end of a dock.

Here's some of the humorous commentary for The humble Farmer show for the week of April 22, 2012.

1. Stephen King raised a fuss when he told some students that if they couldn’t read they’d very likely end up in Walmart or in the army. Let’s hope he learned something from this: Always consider the consequences before telling the truth in public.

3. We all have things that we can do. And there are other things that we cannot do. Perhaps an adult might be defined as: “a person who knows what he can do and what he can’t do --- and isn’t afraid to admit it.” The email I received said, “humble, Don't you remember what I thought of as Plan A?” Of course I don’t remember anything about Plan A. Because I’d like you to learn a little more about me, you might listen closely to the reply I sent to this person: “Please realize that I don’t remember much of anything. My talent is not in remembering, but in synthesizing that which I have recently heard and presenting it to you and my other friends as original material.”

8. My wife Marsha has 47 first cousins and one of them was here last week. She said they had an exchange student in their home for two weeks. Of course, they asked for one who didn't smoke. He was a French kid from Zieer and they picked him because his picture looked so sweet, and they figured he'd be less worldly than a French kid from France. But when he arrived he showed them some nude pictures of himself and told them that his father and grandfather had taken him to a brothel to get him drunk on his sixteenth birthday. Of course, you go down way east on the coast of Maine and that kind of party wouldn't be necessary. But then they found a heap of cigarette butts underneath this kid's bedroom window. I'll bet he'll think twice before he lies on his application again, because they really punished him. They made him drive a car in Boston
