Episode Description:

BV 12-04 - Jim Lehman - Author, Historian, Story Teller, Mentor - Part 1
Jim Lehman, author of "The Old Brethren" is featured in the initial program of a two program series. Jim was born into the Church of the Brethren in Lancaster County, PA and serves in the Highland Avenue congregation in Elgin, Illinois.

Thirty years ago he was asked by Wilber Brumbaugh to write a book on Brethren Heritage. As a graduate of Bethany Theological Seminary, Jim was offered a small stipend and began his work in the Brethren Historical Library and Archives which at that time resembled a "dungeon." His work, "The Old Brethren" is now in its second edition. The project turned out to be one of the most unexpected and satisfying times in his life. He developed a deep interest in Brethren history and recognized a calling to be a writer.

This edition of "Brethren Voices" gives us a glimpse of Jim's history in the Church of the Brethren and a look at the Old Brethren who lived their lives with "order, wisdom, and simplicity."

The second program, our May edition, allows Jim to discuss writing and storytelling and features one of Jim's favorite stories about the beginnings of Brethren Volunteer Service.

The June edition features the youth of the Palmyra Church of the Brethren who were instrumental to the beginnings of the community's Caring Cupboard which provides emergency food to the hungry of Palmyra, PA. Approximately seven years ago, a Sunday School teacher asked the elementary class the question, "What would Jesus do?" They responded, "Feed the hungry." That set into motion a food collection drive. The Palmyra congregation became known as the place where people could go for emergency food. Today, there are 25 area churches involved in Caring Cupboard and it all started with the question, "What would Jesus do?"
