Episode Description:

One of the most interesting areas of science is the relatively new field of neurobotics. It combines neuroscience with robotics, and is closely related to artificial intelligence. One of its goals is to create prosthetic limbs that can function as easily as natural ones and are controlled by brain power alone. One of the leaders in this field is Yoky Matsuoka, who is the guest on this episode of Future Talk.

Yoky was the founder and director of the Neurobotics Laboratory at the University of Washington, and is currently Vice President of Technology at a Silicon Valley company called Nest. She's won numerous awards, including a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant which includes a stipend of $500,000, and a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers which is given by the President of the United States. She's been profiled on PBS's NOVA, and has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from M.I.T. She also has her own nonprofit foundation, YokyWorks, whose mission is to develop ingenious engineering solutions to help people overcome their physical and sensory limitations.

Yoky Matsuoka was born in Japan to parents who wanted her to be a champion athlete. She was a highly ranked tennis player and moved to the U.S. to pursue her tennis career. A series of injuries ended her tennis hopes, but she became fascinated by the mind-body relationship as she watched her body heal itself, and that sparked her interest in building artifical limbs that could duplicate human functions. She's quite an interesting person and well worth listening to.
