Episode Description:

This is the 5th and last of the series on Maine Grassroots Media, taped at Unity College on September 10. Shenna Bellows, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, Maine tells us how the media repeats lies told by politicians and special interest groups. Often, those same people fail to tell the whole truth. This leaves us all in a position where we do not know how to vote in an intelligent manner. She offers specific cases. After Shenna speaks, Jay Davis of the Maine Center for Public Reporting explains how untrue facts get delivered to the people. One reason is that newspapers, due to lack of funds, are letting go of all their investigative reporters. In the past, even the TV and radio media depended on newspaper reporter to dig out the real truth. Jay goes so far as to say some reporters are too lazy to even verify a comment or story. Both Shenna and Jay agree that grassrooots media can take up the slack if they operate with integrity.
