New information technology is having a huge impact on how we manage our health. People are gaining better and faster access to all kinds of health information, both from doctors and other health consumers, and becoming much more active participants in their own well being. This episode looks at several young companies that are offering ways for people to use this technology for their benefit. There are two studio guests:

John de Souza is president and CEO of MedHelp (www.medhelp.com), which is the world's largest online health community with more than 12 million unique visitors per month. John is an entrepreneur who’s helped found several successful internet startups, including Flash Communications and Smartleaf. He's also a scientific researcher who has worked on guidance systems for robotic surgery at IBM, virtual reality systems for NASA's Neurolab Space Project, and tools for laparoscopic surgery at the University of Tokyo. He has a master’s degree in electrical engineering from MIT and an MBA from the College des Ingenieurs in France.

Bruce Cohen is president and CEO of Vitapath Genetics (www.vpgenetics.com), which offers individualized DNA analysis to help customize treatments for specific diseases. He helped found two other biotech startup companies and has spent over 25 years in leadership positions in the life science and high technology fields. He’s also a member of the Personalized Medicine Coalition, which seeks to make medical treatments more uniquely tailored to the individual’s genetic makeup. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School.

The show also features footage of the 2011 Health 2.0 Conference in San Francisco, including interviews with several of the entrepreneurs there. Karl Ulfers is the vice president of consumer solutions at Optum Health (www.optumhealth.com), which builds products that foster better online communications between health care consumers and health care providers, Brent Poole is CEO of Mindbloom (www.mindbloom.com), whose online product seeks to improve your mental, physical and spiritual health through a social gaming experience, and Damon Ramsey M.D. is CEO of Healthism (www.healthism.com), which offers online social networking tools aimed at preventive health maintenance.
